We passed by the infamous Flaming Mountains from the legendary Chinese folk story, Journey to the West while on our way to Turpan.
The Flaming Mountains (Chinese: 火焰山; pinyin: huǒyànshān) or Gaochang Mountains are barren, eroded, redsandstone hills in Tian Shan Mountain range, Xinjiang, China.
The Flaming Mountains received their name from a fantasy account of a Buddhist monk, Xuanzang accompanied by a Monkey King with magical powers, who runs into a wall of flames on his pilgrimage to India in the popular 16th century novel, Journey to the West.

The small oasis town of Turpan has long been a Silk Road outpost. The town is located in a depression 80m below sea level, which accounts for its extreme climate- approximate 45deg C in summer and well below freezing in winter.
