The first major city we hit on crossing from Gansu is Hami. Known across China for its melons (Chinese: 哈密瓜; pinyin: Hāmì guā) In Mandarin, "Hami Gua" can also be used to refer to cantaloupe. Legends have it that King of Hami presented the melon to the reigning Qing Emperor in the 17th century when he visited Beijing and the Emperor loved it so much hence name it ‘Hami melon’.

We arrived Hami town earlier than expected so we decided to visit the only local attraction, the Hami King’s Palace and Mausoleum where nine royal generations along with three Arabian preacher were buried here.
The first Hami King built this palace after his return from visit to the Forbidden City, Beijing during the 17th century.

Nothing to write about the town, we stayed near the town railway station and we could clearly hear the train whistle blowing whole night long.
